"Return to nature!" The calls of birds take us back to our roots, awakening a sense of life, hope and harmony. But what happens when they cross paths with our ruthlessness? Extinction Room (Hopeless.) is a stereophonic performative dream. Stories, music and dance lead spectators to a definitive ending point: the point of extinction. So unique is this collaboration between three foreign creatives and young Czech artists and youth that it will be presented twice during the festival. 21 species sentenced to death and 21 bird stories; the spectator can walk through them alongside the performers and feel the urgency of their call. Extinction Room can be understood as a point of contact with the great beyond; we may never grasp it in its entirety, but we can let ourselves be enchanted by individual fragments, tones and movements.

A beautiful, heartbreaking show. In an unceasingly warming world, what is left of idyllic nature? - Jérôme Bel

Extinction Room was first presented in 2019 at Art Radionica Lazareti in Dubrovník, followed by performances for eXplore Dance Festival (Bucharest), Piatra Neamt Theatre Festival (Romania), Europalia Arts Festival (Bozar, Brussels), Zuhören #4 (Berlin), Tanznacht Berlin, Artdanthé Festival (Vanves) and ImPulsTanz (Vienna).

Originally from Romania, choreographer Sergiu Matis has lived and worked in Berlin since 2008. He studied at the Liceul de Coregrafie in Cluj and the Mannheim Academy of Dance.  In addition to his own creations, he also leads workshops and other educational projects around the world.
