The TANEC PRAHA 2024 Festival takes place under the auspices of the President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel.
Over one evening, the audience will have the opportunity to experience three unique dance solos by African dancers. The vibrant choreographies open questions related to the position of men and women in society and the cultural legacy we carry with us as individuals.
Amala Dianor (FR/SN) will visit the Czech Republic for the first time with his legendary solo Man Rec accompanied by a female adaptation Wo-Man performed by the young and talented dancer Nagaline Gomis. Dynamic dancer and choreographer Mai Júli Machado (MZ) will then present her award-winning solo Sinais Particulares.
Sinais Particulares
Every young African woman bears a special burden that accompanies her to the end of her life. Mai Júli Machado addresses this cultural and social burden in her solo Sinais Particulares. It draws attention to the unequal status of African women through raw and deeply emotional dance.
"No girl wants to be a victim. Or even vulnerable. That's why she fights."
Man Rec
The starting point for the solo Man Rec is the idea of the individual's complex nature, his identity and his relationship to others and to society. Taking a vigorous approach to all the different forms of dance that have been part of the Senegalese dancer and choreographer's journey, Amala Dianor explores multiple selves, gradually and relentlessly revealing parts of himself. Man Rec means "just me" in Wolof (a Niger-Congo language widely spoken in Senegal). One dancer alone on stage to face himself and the audience.
Wo-Man
In 2018, Dianor met the young dancer Nagaline Gomis, who inspired him to later adapt the famous solo Man Rec. Wo-Man is a sequel, another perspective that offers a different tension, vitality and power. Wo-Man is the female version of "just me", bringing more diverse cultural influences to the original masterpiece.
The performance uses spoken word in English.
Mai-Júli Machado Nhapulo is a young dancer and choreographer from Mozambique. She devoted herself to traditional Mozambican and African tribal dances and took part in many workshops with leading contemporary dancers and choreographers such as Idio Chichava or Wim Vandekeybus. She also completed several internships abroad. She won three prizes at the Solo-Dance Theatre Festival Stuttgart in 2023 for her solo Sinais Particulares.
Amala Dianor graduated from the prestigious CNDC school in Angers. For ten years he worked as a dancer with numerous choreographers and in very diverse fields (hip hop, neoclassicism, contemporary dance, Afro) before founding his own dance group Cie Amala Dianor in France in 2012. Man Rec (2014) is his first solo and the beginning of a close collaboration with music composer Awir Léon. Dianor often collaborates with other choreographers, composers, writers and artists. His choreography will open the Summer Olympics in Paris this year.
