An upcoming workshop will offer a deep dive into the unique movement language of Pál Frenák’s artistic legacy, led by one of his dedicated mentees. Participants will explore the fusion of mimics, sign language, and integrated body movement, characteristic of Frenák Company’s approach. Drawing inspiration from contemporary architecture, butoh, and Francis Bacon’s raw expressions, the workshop will focus on sensitivity, spatial awareness, and dynamic physicality, providing an immersive exploration of contemporary dance.
Pál Frenák, multi-award winning Hungarian choreographer, became an emblematic creator from the 80s, both in Paris and in Budapest. Originally founded in France and ever since 2000 operating in Hungary, Frenák Company (formerly known as Compagnie Pál Frenák) has represented Hungarian contemporary dance in more than 30 countries.
Some unique characteristics of Frenák Company is the use of mimics, sign language and integrated body movement, just like the implementation of other disciplines of arts, such as contemporary circus, fashion, design, architecture and music.
With his own dynamic way of movement, sensitivity and extraordinary expressions, Pál Frenák has introduced a radically new style in the Eastern European contemporary dance scene. His innovative way of using body and space had a serious impact not only on the Hungarian, but also the French and international contemporary dance. The most significant inspirations are contemporary architecture, the Japanese butoh, the life and work of painter Francis Bacon, and philosopher Gilles Deleuze.
